THERE WAS A LONG PERIOD IN AMERICA when American culture, like other cultures of the world were influenced greatly by Christians who had been influenced by God's Word.  For centuries, Believers have accepted God's Word, lived according to its standards and influenced culture by doing so.  In recent decades, however, the script has been flipped.  It now seems that culture is influencing Christians more than Christians are influencing culture. In fact, Christians are beginning to re-invent Scripture based on what culture is saying; a complete reversal from what has occurred for centuries and what ought to be occuring.

I ADDRESSED THIS IN THE MESSAGE ON January 4.  Here's a brief clip from that message:

HERE’S AN EXAMPLE.   In the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s it was rare in America that a restaurant was open before Noon on Sundays.  Many stores were closed on Sundays.  The purpose was to allow Christians to worship.  In fact, Christians were so devoted to their scheduled appointment with the Almighty, that it simply wasn’t practical for stores to try to remain open.  Even Wednesdays were different. Most schools didn’t have extra-curricular activities on Wednesdays because so many Christians participated in “midweek” services.

THEN, THERE WAS A SHIFT.  More stores began to open.  More restaurants began to open earlier. And, even schools began planning Wednesday evening activities.    And, before long, church attendance on both Sundays and Wednesdays declined.

WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT?  Keeping people out of church has kept people from being saved.  Churches, even our own used to have programs on Wednesdays that attracted visitors and led them to Christ.  Replicating that model from decades gone by would no doubt be beneficial, yet very difficult given the impact the culture is having on the church and on Christians.

THAT’S JUST ONE EXAMPLE.  We believe there are probably many.
