EACH YEAR CHRISTIANS AROUND THE WORLD pause to observe Good Friday—the day Jesus Christ was crucified. Yet for many, the question naturally arises: Why is Good Friday called “good”? How can a day marked by suffering, betrayal, and death be described in such a positive way?
THE ANSWER LIES NOT in what happened to Jesus, but in what happened because of Jesus. From a human perspective, Good Friday appears tragic. Jesus was mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross. His disciples were scattered. Hope seemed lost.
BUT SCRIPTURE REVEALS A DIFFERENT REALITY
“But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, ASV)
What looked like defeat was actually God’s greatest victory.
The cross was not an accident—it was a divine appointment.
1. It is Good Because Sin Was Paid For
On the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our sin. Every wrong, every failure, every act of rebellion was placed upon Him. He became our substitute.
“who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree… by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24, ASV)
Because of this, forgiveness is now available to all who believe.
2. It is Good Because God’s Love Was Displayed
The cross is the ultimate expression of love. Not a love that speaks, but a love that sacrifices.
Jesus did not die for the righteous—He died for sinners.
That means His love extends to you, right where you are.
3. It is Good Because Access to God Was Opened
When Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). This symbolized that the barrier between God and man had been removed.
No longer separated, we are invited into a personal relationship with God through Christ.
4. It is Good Because It Leads to Resurrection
Good Friday cannot be understood apart from Easter Sunday. The cross was not the end—it was the pathway to the empty tomb.
Without the cross, there is no resurrection. Without the sacrifice, there is no victory.
Good Friday is more than a historical event—it is a personal message.
It tells us:
But like any gift, it must be received.
AS YOU REFLECT ON GOOD FRIDAY take time to consider what the cross means for you personally. Slow down. Read the Gospel accounts. Let the weight of the moment sink in.
AND THEN RESPOND
ONE OF THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITIES during this season is to share the message of the cross with others. Many people understand Easter as a celebration, but they have never fully grasped the significance of Good Friday. This is your opportunity. Invite someone to church. Share your story. Talk about what Jesus has done in your life. Because what happened on that day was not just good—it was eternally good.
GOOD FRIDAY REMINDS US that even in the darkest moment in history, God was working His greatest good.
AND BECAUSE OF THAT we can say with confidence—Good Friday truly is good.
